Whether you are a long-time parishioner or newcomer; whether you are “church-shopping” or simply surfing the web, we are happy to welcome you to The American Cathedral in Paris.
We are a large urban parish with an active, committed and diverse congregation. Located on the famous Avenue George V in the heart of Paris, the Cathedral community is blessed to make its home in an elegantly beautiful neo-gothic space, the brilliant and sensitive work of the 19th century English architect, Edmund Street. In making the sacred passage from the streets of the city into the nave of the Cathedral, we enter into a different realm, a dimension of life that is transcendent and yet strangely familiar.
In this exciting parish community, we are young and old, rich and
poor, progressive and traditional; a broad and vibrant mix of nationalities,
races, and religious backgrounds. While English is the common
language of our worship and community life, a growing number of
native French speakers find the Cathedral to be a welcoming spiritual
home. The diversity that characterizes this congregation strengthens
and challenges us.
As a Cathedral, we serve as the gathering church and “mother
church” for the Convocation of American (Episcopal) Churches
in Europe. The Convocation includes eight lively and thriving
parishes and several missions located throughout Western Europe.
The Convocation is under the jurisdiction of the Episcopal Church
in the United States and we are part of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
As a cathedral, we serve as the ceremonial seat for the Convocation’s
Bishop-in-Charge.
It is our hope that you will find in this cathedral, a place of beauty, refreshment, and peace; a safe haven amidst the frenzy of life. We hope that you will experience here some sense of the spaciousness and hospitality of a God who loves you more than you could ever ask or imagine.
We invite you to join us in the thrill and swirl of Cathedral life. We invite you to join with us in the journey toward justice and peace as we strive to respect the dignity of every human being and the sanctity of all creation. A vast range of programs and opportunities awaits you. We pray that in your engagement with this exciting, ever- evolving parish community, your heart and imagination will be filled and stirred. We hope that you will be nurtured, fed, and challenged so that your own witness to the love of God might be radiant and bold.
